Wu Sangui (吳三桂) was a Ming Chinese general who opened the gates of the Great Wall of China to let the Manchu soldiers into China proper. It is commonly believed that he led to the ultimate destruction of the Ming Empire and the establishment of the Qing Empire by the Manchus. Knowing that he would not be able to win the throne of China, he decided to surrender to the Manchu. After they conquered China, Wu Sangui received titles and wealth from the Qing Empire.
In contemporary China, Wu Sangui is regarded as a traitor and opportunist.
Does this sound familiar to you? Who is our "Wu Sangui"?
And guess what? Later on, he revolted against the Qing Empire and declared himself the the emperor of a new Zhou Dynasty. That goes to show that you can never trust anyone. There is no loyalty in politics.
