From 'The Malaysian Insider':
Umno to be open to all Malaysians? If Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, the MP for Gua Musang, had his way the party would be open to all Malaysians, not just Malays. This was one of three points he made in his speech during the Gua Musang Umno division EGM this morning.
In addressing the issue of 'kelemahan Umno', Ku Li also called for the abolishing of Umno’s nomination quota system for candidates contesting top leadership posts in the party. This was not entirely unexpected as removing the quota system would make it easier for Ku Li to contest against Umno president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the upcoming Umno elections in December.
He also said the 'perangai moral orang Umno' needs to be changed. An example he gave was the way the election campaign was carried out in Kelantan. He said the war cries and war mongering attitudes were not consistent with how cultured Malay Muslims should behave. There was a particularly pointed reference to Khairy Jamaludin when he made references to the behaviour of people educated in Oxford and Harvard who did not have the qualities of 'pemimpin Umno'.
Also, he said Umno was seen by many Malays as no longer the party which upheld the rights and culture of the Malays while ironically, non-Malays saw Umno as a party which was only interested in the rights of the Malays. Ku Li said today Umno was seen as a corrupt party — a 'parti orang kaya di atas' that did not look after or represent the 'orang miskin' at the bottom.
